Five foreigners arrested by kidnapping syndicates in Gauteng-South Africa

A Zimbabwean businessman was abducted outside his workplace on Sunday and police made arrests about 24 hours later.
Police have arrested 14 people who are allegedly part of a kidnapping syndicate in Gauteng.

Authorities investigated the abduction of a Zimbabwean businessman, with evidence leading them to several locations around Johannesburg.

Assisted by private security and several other police units, the anti-kidnapping task force made arrests in Greenstone Park and Sandton on Monday, while the businessman was rescued in Soweto.

Among the 14 suspects apprehended, some of whom were women, were three Chinese nationals and two Mozambicans.

Eight of the suspects were arrested in Greenstone Park, while the remaining ones were apprehended in Sandton.

At the scenes, police found speedpoint machines, cash allegedly pulled from victims’ bank accounts and a firearm stolen during a house robbery in Linden.

“In recent weeks, police have been able to intercept a number of kidnappers linked to syndicates who kidnap businessmen and demand large sums as ransom,” national police spokesman Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said.

“Communities are urged to continue to report suspicious activity in and around their area to ensure that we take decisive action against these criminals,” she added.
