[In one of my recent videos I was reading from a book about Portugal's African Wars. Someone in Portugal was interested in the mention of the 11 great families who rule Portugal. I searched the book and here are some excerpts that relate to these families. One is Cohen – which is definitely Jewish. But I don't know, based on the Portuguese names, whether any others are Jewish. I do know that Salazar was very pro-Jewish, in the same was that Bismarck of Germany was very pro-Jewish. Jan]

São Tomé and Principe are very much the domains of
Portugal’s richest families known as the ‘great families’
who are major stockholders of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino
(BNU).

This bank, one of the oldest in the world, has as associates
the Crédit Franco-Portugais, le Comptoir National
d’Escompte de Paris, the Midland Bank Executor and
Trust Company, the Westminster Bank Ltd, and the
Spanish-American Bank.

A CONCP bulletin dating from 1968 listed as follows the
‘great families’ :
Sommer (great agricultural family allied with the
Mello family in CUF); Teotonio Pereira (former ambassador

Holstein Beek (Duke of Pamela); Pinto Basto; Soares de
Albergaria; Monteiro Belard; Sousa Lara (director of
CADA of Angola). And certain financiers such as D.
Diogo Pessanha, Antonio Piano, and D. Arthur Menezes
Correia de Sa (Viscount of Merceana), Vice-Governor of
BNU.

The new laws of 1838 and 1878 did little to change this situation, and the French slave traders – who usually acted as intermediaries
between the two continents – continued their activities
until the demand had dried up completely. It was the first
time that decisions emanating from the metropolis had met
with opposition from the Portuguese colonists. A similar
conflict was experienced later by France and Great Britain
ln dealing with their own colonies. In Portugal’s case it was
prevented from increasing by a return to power of the great
colonial families in Lisbon.

In order to gain some profit from these cheaply extracted raw materials, the state acts simply as an agent for them, taking its percentage
before passing them on to the powerful economic empires
established elsewhere. And the big business families of Lisbon
serve as intermediaries in these deals.

Although all the NATO bases were negotiated with the
Salazar government on terms favourable to Portugal, their
presence nevertheless gives rise to protests from a whole
sector of Portuguese opinion, including a number of
staunch supporters of the regime. Perhaps the big Portuguese
families are afraid that this impressive show of force
will be turned against them if one day the members of
NATO decide they can no longer bear the cost of Portugal’s
policies in Africa, or her antidemocratic excesses at home.
