Certain African airlines have been banned from operating in Europe and the United States due to safety concerns.

European Union (EU):
Air Tanzania: As of December 2024, Air Tanzania has been added to the EU’s Air Safety List, effectively barring the airline from operating within EU airspace due to safety concerns.

Other African Airlines: The EU maintains a comprehensive Air Safety List that includes several African airlines from countries such as Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sudan, among others. These airlines are prohibited from operating within the EU due to failure to meet international safety standards.

United States:
Nigerian Airlines: In September 2024, Nigerian airlines were barred from operating flights to the United States following a lapse in their Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Category One safety status. This restriction resulted from Nigeria’s airlines failing to maintain direct flights to the U.S. for over two years, as mandated by the FAA’s International Aviation Safety Assessment Program.

These bans are typically imposed when airlines or their respective civil aviation authorities fail to comply with international safety standards set by organizations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The primary goal of these restrictions is to ensure passenger safety by preventing airlines with substandard safety practices from operating in certain airspaces.
