United States:
Nigerian Airlines: In September 2024, Nigerian airlines were barred from operating flights to the United States following a lapse in their Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Category One safety status. This restriction resulted from Nigeria’s airlines failing to maintain direct flights to the U.S. for over two years, as mandated by the FAA’s International Aviation Safety Assessment Program.

These bans are typically imposed when airlines or their respective civil aviation authorities fail to comply with international safety standards set by organizations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The primary goal of these restrictions is to ensure passenger safety by preventing airlines with substandard safety practices from operating in certain airspaces.
