Organisation had a productive meeting with SAPS, but minister wants to sow division and undermine progress made Farm murders: AfriForum hits back over minister distorting facts

27 March 2025

AfriForum today criticised Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni’s misrepresentation of the content of a meeting between AfriForum and the South African Police Service (SAPS) and argues that her statements show that the government is more concerned about its own image than about facts. AfriForum emphasises that the organisation did not, as Ntshavheni now falsely claims, admit during this meeting that the farm murder statistics presented by Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu in February during the launch of the latest crime statistics were accurate.

This meeting, which took place on 18 March, followed a dispute between AfriForum and Mchunu after the latter tried to downplay the seriousness of farm attacks. During this meeting, AfriForum and members of the SAPS discussed the crime statistics register for the third quarter of 2024. The purpose was to compare AfriForum’s list of farm attacks with that of the SAPS and not to clarify any allegations of so-called “white genocide” as Ntshavheni is now alleging.

Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s Chief Spokesperson for Community Safety, was part of the AfriForum delegation that attended this meeting. “For the minister to let out such lies about what was discussed speaks volumes and is unacceptable. There were differences of opinion on various issues during the meeting, but both parties agreed to put the disputes aside for the time being until we can hold further meetings on this,” explains Broodryk.

During the meeting, AfriForum also questioned the SAPS’ application of their own definition of a farm attack. It was agreed to meet regularly in the future to discuss incidents of farm attacks.

“We had a productive meeting with the SAPS, but it appears that the minister wants to sow division and undermine the progress that has been made by deliberately spreading lies about what was discussed during the meeting,” concludes Broodryk.
