The Solidarity Movement welcomed a series of sharp statements yesterday by the chairman of the Africa subcommittee in the American Congress in Washington, DC. John James, a black Republican from Michigan, stated during a public hearing on the relationship between South Africa and the USA that South Africa, under the ANC government, has descended into a downward spiral of corruption, state capture, and increasing government dependence, and that it has deviated from the values that were upheld by the ANC government in the 1990s.
Last week, during a visit to Washington, the Solidarity Movement handed over various documents to James’ policy head. These documents include information on state capture, the proposed expropriation without compensation, centralization of power, as well as crime statistics, including those of farm murders. According to Werner Human, Chief Operating Officer of the Movement, several of the Movement’s arguments were used during yesterday’s hearings by James and his fellow congressmen. "It is clear to us that a very strong voice is emerging against the ANC’s abuse of power in the American Congress. We welcome this."
The Solidarity Movement is currently on an extensive visit to the USA, during which information about events in South Africa is being made available to policymakers, as well as concrete proposals on what the USA can do to help protect the rule of law in South Africa, and what can be done to curb South Africa’s increasing centralist and anti-Western policy directions. According to Jaco Kleynhans, head of international liaison at the Solidarity Movement, there have been ongoing discussions with members of the American Congress over the past few months, as well as with politicians in various American states, regarding this matter.
"We expect that the pressure on the ANC government will increase significantly over the next few months. While yesterday’s hearing in Washington provided a taste of this, we also expect that politicians in several states will soon take a strong stand against the centralization of power by the ANC, new discrimination against minorities in South Africa, the ongoing state capture and corruption by the ANC and the EFF, and some ANC politicians’ racist rhetoric, as well as the government’s pro-China and pro-Russia policies, which are increasingly taking on an anti-Western coloration."
James was particularly critical of the ANC’s planned legislation on expropriation without compensation and the decline of democracy in South Africa. "No country in the world has remained democratic after doing away with the population’s rights to private property, and I remain concerned about the ANC’s eroding of democracy and constitutional supremacy, especially in light of the Electoral Amendment Act that was ratified in April – legislation that undermines the fundamental democratic principle of proportional representation."
According to Human, the Solidarity Movement handed over both the proposed amendment to Article 25 of the Constitution, the so-called property clause, and the Expropriation Bill to James’ policy head last week. "South Africa, as a supposed constitutional democracy, entrenched private property rights in the Constitution in 1996, with a necessary clause stipulating that no property may be expropriated without compensation. The ANC is now determined to change this, following the route of Venezuela and others to overthrow the democratic imperative of property rights. The bill on the constitutional amendment is attached hereto. After an initial round of public hearings and inputs, the process came to a standstill. However, the issue can flare up at any time," said Human.
According to Kleynhans, the Solidarity Movement plans to steer South Africa’s policy direction in the right direction over the next few months through comprehensive pressure from the USA. "Today we have once again appealed to politicians not to punish ordinary people in South Africa through stricter trade restrictions and similar measures, but to criticize the ANC’s corruption, mismanagement, discrimination, and ideologically-driven foreign policy more sharply and to further isolate the ANC government. We are also working on a comprehensive plan to garner support in the USA for civil society in South Africa. Yesterday’s hearing in Washington helps create momentum for this."
