In a concerted effort to combat criminal activities during the festive season period, the SAPS Lebowakgomo swiftly recovered stolen properties following a shootout with the suspects. The significant breakthrough took place in the early hours of Tuesday, 19 December 2023.

The police were busy performing crime prevention duties when they spotted a suspicious white Isuzu bakkie about 02:00 in Makurung Village, travelling towards Lebowakgomo.

They then attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspects sped off. They gave chase, and the suspects opened fire on the police. Following a brief exchange of gunfire, the six suspects managed to evade the arrest by fleeing the scene on foot.

The recovered stolen items include the computer, cellphones, bank cards, driver’s license, and liquor. The Isuzu bakkie was also confiscated.

These items are believed to be linked to recent reported burglaries in the area. A preliminary investigation further indicated that some of the liquor was stolen during a burglary incident at a liquor outlet in Makotse Village on the same date.

The incident has prompted an immediate and intensive manhunt for the suspects. No injuries sustained during the incident. Police have opened a case of attempted murder.

The Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has commended the persistence and resilience displayed by members during the incident.

She further urges residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to assist in the ongoing investigation.
