The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has announced that measles cases continue to soar across the country. This comes two months after the NICD announced an increase in the number of measles infections due to an outbreak in Limpopo province. Health officials there have since started public health response activities with the support of the NICD and the World Health Organisation.

The NICD has reminded citizens that measles patients present with fever, rash, and one or more of these symptoms – cough, red eyes, and runny nose. In addition, complications of measles include pneumonia, diarrhoea, dehydration, encephalitis, blindness and death. The NICD explained that measles complications are severe in malnourished children and infants under two years of age.
