The Meaning of Rudyard Kiplings 1899 Poem: The White Mans Burden
Rudyard Kiplings poem ‘The White Mans Burden‘ was published in 1899, during a time of significant colonial expansion by European powers, particularly the British Empire, and the United States.

[Whites have been inventing zillions of items for use by the Blacks. All my life I've seen instance after instance where Whites invent things that help these Black ingrates to improve their lives. Here is the latest item, a foot-powered washing machine. All these ideas are a total waste of time. On some occasions the Blacks use them. All the ideas are simple and cheap and aimed at helping the ungrateful Blacks. I truly wish Whites would stop doing this and rather invent things for Whites. These Blacks are not our children, and they're ungrateful, hate-filled people. Truly, we are wasting our talents and our lives. Jan]
