S.Africa: 20 Firearms recovered, over 940 suspects arrested, Gauteng

Gauteng police continued with crime prevention operations in the first weekend of the new year and arrested more 940 suspects for various crimes. The multidisciplinary operations that started on 1 January 2021 also led to the recovery of more than nine 900 ammunition and 20 firearms that include AK-47 assault rifle, shotguns and pistols.
On a plot in Fochville, the West Rand Trio Task Team seized seven rifles and more than 700 ammunition from the suspect that was wanted for possession of unlicensed firearms. These firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain whether they were involved in any crimes in the country. The public is reminded to surrender unwanted and illegal firearms during the firearm amnesty that is coming to end on 31 January 2021.
In West Rand police arrested 145 suspects during operations that included stop and searches and enforcement of Disaster Management Act Regulations. Suspects were arrested for crime ranging from sexual assault, robbery with a weapon other than a firearm, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, common assault, possession of drugs, malicious damage to property and contravention of Disaster Management Act.
Police in Sedibeng District secured a total number of 127 arrests during joint and intensified crime prevention operations and suspects tracing.
The suspects were arrested for crimes such as murder, house robbery, possession of stolen goods, possession of stolen vehicles, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, theft, driving while under the influence of alcohol, malicious damage to property, warrant of arrest, pointing of firearm, theft, dealing in liquor without license, possession of dagga, common robbery and non-compliance with lockdown regulations.
A total number of 347 suspects were arrested within the Ekurhuleni District. Joint operations were held with various law enforcement agencies and resulted in arrests of suspects for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, kidnapping, attempted murder, pointing of firearm, rape, possession of drugs, shoplifting, theft, reckless and negligent driving, malicious damage to property, armed robbery, house breaking and theft, public indecency, common assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and driving while under the influence of alcohol.
About 210 suspects were arrested by the police in Johannesburg. The suspects were arrested for crime ranging from murder, possession of unlicensed firearm, business burglary, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of drugs, interfering with police duties, contravention of Disaster Management Act, shoplifting and reckless and negligent driving.
Police in Tshwane engaged in a number of high density operations that resulted in the arrest of 108 suspects over the weekend. Suspects have committed offences that include assault common, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to property, possession of drugs, contravention of protection order, robbery with weapon other than firearm, housebreaking and theft, shoplifting and burglary at residential premises.
Suspects are expected to appear before different Magistrates’ courts in Gauteng in due course.
