A manhunt has been launched for four unidentified men who on Monday, 4 January 2021, allegedly robbed a supermarket, then fired shots and wounded two police officers in Rustenburg.

According to reports, the men whose faces were covered with masks entered the store on Arend Road at about 13:30 and pointed one of the cashiers with a firearm. The suspects allegedly emptied the cash register and ran out of the store. As they ran out, they spotted and disarmed a police officer who was about to enter the store. It is further alleged that the suspects fired several shots towards the Rustenburg Flying Squad vehicle which was in the parking area. As a result, a Sergeant and a Warrant Officer sustained hand and arm gunshot wounds.

The suspects subsequently fled from the scene driving in a silver Volkswagen Polo vehicle.

The two injured officers were taken to hospital for medical treatment. Consequently, one was treated and discharged while another was admitted for further treatment.

At this stage, police have not yet received reports of injuries from bystanders.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena who condemned the incident, mobilised a 72-hour Activation Plan which includes the deployment of Crime Intelligence, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Forensics, Detective Services and other units.
